2011 nissan gtr premium

After recently driving the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, I didn’t think I’d find something to top that car for quite some time. The 2011 Nissan GT-R may just be that car. Not to take anything away from the SLS, which for me takes the title of best Mercedes ever, at least for now, the GT-R is a point-and-shoot joy, a pure performance machine but outfitted with the kinds of bells and whistles sure to delight the owner and passengers for years to come. The car strikes me much like what the next Acura NSX coulda, shoulda been, if Honda hadn’t killed what had been the best everyday supercar on the planet.

Launching this car off the line is nothing short of spectacular, with all four tires digging for traction, sending the car to hyperspeed quicker than you can say “wookie.” Overall weight checks in at 3,800 pounds, but this car doesn’t seem to even notice the heft as it hammers to speed, turns even the tightest corners into straightaways, and stops on a proverbial dime. And if all those gauges are correct in the center stack, it does all that without ever approaching more than 60 percent of its capacity in any given area.

The car truly is built for the video-game generation, with lots of extras that appear carried over directly from cyberspace racing games, or vice versa. But thankfully, Nissan avoided making the car too civilized–the gear and engine noises all permeate the cabin, and the suspension is hard as granite even in its softer non-R setting.

Amazingly for a sports car of this caliber, there is an actual functional back seat–I put a teenager in there without chopping off any limbs to make him fit. So that makes the car almost practical for everyday life. I did say “almost.”

Ironically, at least around Detroit, the car only draws attention from the knowing car enthusiast–most people look at it like it’s a gussied up Ford Mustang or something. Little do they realize what they’re missing.
