The above lump of ugliness is brought to you by the fine folks at Nissan and yep, they’re really going to build it. Meet the 2012 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, an SUV that has every feature you’ve never wanted. This vehicle is a real gamble for Nissan and quite honestly I see it as one that they didn’t have to take. Nissan is touting the CrossCabriolet as the first 4-seater, all-wheel-drive crossover convertible, the problem is that just because you’re first to market, it doesn’t mean that there actually IS a market for that particular product. One reason people purchase SUV’s and crossovers is for the feeling of safety that they deliver. They’re all-wheel drive, stand a bit higher up than conventional automobiles and mentally, give you that feeling of security. By chopping off the top Nissan has decided to negate this feeling on the hopes that owners and passengers will opt for the drop-top experience.The 2012 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet is going to be a niche market vehicle at best, just as the Chrysler’s PT Cruiser drop-top was, or Isuzu’s open air Amigo 4×4. The big question for Nissan though is going to be whether it was actually worth the cost of development when all is said and done, because lets face it, this thing isn’t going to be the prettiest gal at the prom.
